Are you looking to keep up with technology? That might mean you want to ditch your formal, paper journal and start using journal software. If you use your computer a lot and want to try a new way of journaling, journal software might be a great choice.

Journal Software is More Flexible

Some people prefer journal software due to it’s increased flexibility. If you write something in your journal, it’s already typed up. This way, if you were writing a story, you don’t have to type it all over again. If you are at your computer often, journal software might be a great option. If you have a laptop that you carry around with you a lot, it can still be convenient to carry around with you.

Sometimes journal software can help you out, too. Often they include exercises for when writer’s block comes up, or they help you keep a timeline of your history. There are many different types of software programs. Depending on your goals, one may be better than another.

Software Programs

There are many software programs that you can install on your computer. They can be simple or more complex. Many are designed to keep a personal history of yourself. Others are simple and allow more creativity. You could also try online journal programs as well.

null

Word Processor

If you’re just looking for a simple way to keep your words together, just use a simple word processor such as Microsoft Word or notepad. You can’t get any simpler than that. You can even program it to have a password to open the document if you are worried about prying eyes. This is inexpensive if you already have one of these programs. Also, it allows you to easily arrange your notes or take what you want for other writing pieces you’re working on.

Blog

If you like to be heard, blogging is a great journal software, if that’s how you decide to use it. You can keep an anonymous blog that allows you to spill your guts without giving away your identity. You could make it a personal blog that you only let a few of your closest friends see, or you can be more open with the world. Blogging is still very new but can be a great way of creative expression. There are many places online where you can start a blog for free such as Blogger.com and WordPress.com.

For serious and casual journalers alike, the journal you write in is often just as important as what you write in it. At least, it’s pretty close. If you choose to write in a poorly constructed notebook with a few thin pages, your journal will not last. A quality-built journal will stand up to whatever you throw at it. Whether you keep it safe in your bag wherever you go, or throw it, drop it, and overall beat it up, if it’s been well-made, it will last.

Leather journals are not only good quality, but they look beautiful, too, as long as you get the right one. A leather cover on the outside does not automatically mean good quality paper an binding inside, but there are many great leather journals out there that will last a long time.

Some leather journals will have a leather cover only, and others wrap around, tied up with a string. A journal with some type of closure is almost always preferred because it keeps in look items and better protects the pages.

If you love a leather journal that you have, and maybe you’ve even personalized it, you can often get refills for the journal. This basically means the leather is the cover and you can put in new inserts when you’ve filled them up. For the avid writer, this is a great benefit. It’s also less expensive and takes up less space because you don’t have to keep buying leather journals.

Leather journals can be used for just about anything. They can be used as a basic journal, writer’s notebook, keeping notes and ideas, or even sketching if the paper isn’t ruled. Anything you can do with any kind of journal you can do with a leather journal.

Here are some of the best leather journals you can find. Some are very basic and others have beautiful embossing. Leather journals are higher quality and tend to be more expensive, but you can find leather journals here to fit any budget.

Keeping a fitness journal is a great way to make fitness goals and track your progress toward achieving them. You can sign up for an electronic fitness journal online or you can make your own. Whether you use the assistance of a computer or a regular notebook, here are some great ways to get the most out of a fitness journal.

Write Down your Goals

What fitness goals are you trying to achieve? Do you want to lose weight? Gain muscle? Run a Marathon? Try to be specific. Instead of just saying “to get healthy” say that you want to exercise daily. Being specific will help you feel more accomplished and have something to work toward when you have concrete goals.

Use stepping-stone goals. Start with small goals and work up to the bigger goals. For example, have goals to each 1 extra piece of fruit per day, drink 64 ounces of water per day, and walk 1 mile per day. These goals will begin to stack on each other and work towards more difficult goals.

Write down your goals and update them regularly. Updates will allow you to see your progress right in front of you. Also, when you see how you are progressing, you can modify your goals as necessary and add new ones.

Track your Numbers Progress

A lot of fitness goals will show progress by tracking numbers. If your goal is to do 30 push-ups at once, you should track each day or each workout session how many push-ups you can do. The same goes for repetitions of any exercises, cardio distance and time, and pounds for weight loss. If you are doing an online fitness journal, you can even graph your progress. Set up a spreadsheet where you enter in your progress. Then, build a graph for your results. This is great motivation.

Track your Physical and Emotional Progress

In addition to the numbers, you should track your physical and emotional progress. Physically, write down how you look and feel. Can you see more definition in your arms? Can you run 5 miles a lot faster? Can you see that you look thinner after losing 20 pounds?

Emotional progress is important as well. How does the progress you’ve made make you feel? Do you have more energy and feel happier? Do you feel like you are living a more successful life? Fitness affects you more than just physically. Understanding how everything comes together and tracking it in your fitness journal, whether you’re using a notebook and pen or an online program, will help you to be more successful overall.

If you love to write, you probably keep a journal or a diary. A diary probably makes you think of little girls and their diaries or a food diary when you’re trying to lose weight. If your keeping a chronology of your life, you are keeping a diary. A journal can be this, but it may be a little more. You could include anything from how you feel to a new short story you are writing.

There are many ways you can keep a diary or journal. The traditional way is through a notebook. You can carry it around with you and jot things down whenever you want. You can get very inexpensive notebooks or very expensive leather-bound journals. For many, it’s part of their creativity and style what journal they use.

In the digital age we live in, more and more of what you do is through electronics. Now journaling can be done with diary software, too. There are many advantages to diary software, but a few disadvantages that may keep you with your pen and paper.

Save your Work and Get to it Almost Anywhere

When you write on a computer, you can save your work and pick it up where you left off. If you have a laptop, you can carry it around with you just as a paper notebook. If you write through an online diary software program, you can access your diary wherever you have internet access.

Type Faster and Use Spell Check

Sometimes writing by hand can get very tiring, especially if you’re doing a lot of it. Typing is a lot faster. Also, many notebooks and journals are full of mistakes and having spell check can allow you to correct it right there. Although, many writers aren’t looking for perfection in their journal.

It’s also great for those who do a lot of story writing in their journal. Instead of having to manually transfer it to their computer, it’s already typed up and ready to edit and read. This makes capturing quick notes also easily at your disposal.

If you’re already at your Computer…

A lot of us spend a lot of time at our computer. Writers are one of them. If you write a lot or do anything at your computer often, you’re already at your computer, you might as well write in your journal there, too.

Carrying Convenience

While you can carry a laptop almost anywhere, that doesn’t include everywhere. You can carry a notebook anywhere, especially if it fits in your pocket. Also, you can whip it out and start writing without having to turn anything on or hope there is enough power left. Plus, if you don’t have a laptop, you can’t use one.

Less Secure

A diary software program is generally less secure, depending on how you treat it or a notebook. Some have built in passwords, but things can be broken into and leaked. However, a notebook can also be easily misplaced or stolen if left in the wrong place.

Extinguishing Creativity

Many people love to do more than just write in their journal. They sketch, doodle, paste in things, and use fancy handwriting. There’s never a substitute for good ole’fashioned hand-written words.

If you can’t choose between diary software and a notebook, there’s never anything wrong with balancing both.

5 Reasons to Learn How to Write a Journal

Did you keep a diary when you will a child? What kind of things did you write in it? Maybe some of your entries sounded like this:

Today I went to school. We had a test and it was really hard! I wish I didn’t have to go to school. I hate homework! Me and my best friend Sandy played together at recess. My other best friend Jen wouldn’t play with us because she didn’t want to. I don’t know why. I hope I get something really cool for my birthday…

Your entries may have been more or less exciting and probably full of grammatical and spelling mistakes. This is what we usually think of when writing in a diary or journal. If this is what you imagine and what turns you off of journaling, I assure you, it doesn’t have to be like this. Once you know how to keep and how to write a journal, you can get the full benefits.

1. Learn a little about yourself.

When you start journaling, you write about what is happening in your life, your thoughts, and your feelings. You are exploring who you really are and learning about yourself in the process.

We often feel misguided, lost, confused, or incomplete in our lives. You might feel the happiest you’ve ever felt but aren’t quite sure why. When you begin writing in a journal, you begin exploring who you are. Take just a small amount of time out of every day to write.

When you write, try not to think too much about it. Just let the pen move and the writing flow. You might feel like some days you are only writing nonsense. If you go back and read what you’ve written you’ll see underneath yourself why you do the things you do and why you are the way you are.

Don’t mistaken journaling for a psychiatrist. If you are having a lot of trouble in your life, seeing a psychiatrist will help you a lot where a journal wouldn’t. Whether you see a psychiatrist or not, journal writing can act as great therapy in your life.

2. Get through hard times in your life.

As I just mentioned, journaling can be good therapy. Do you feel broken from losing a loved one? If you don’t feel comfortable talking about it with anyone, you can write about it. Writing will help get it off your chest but still allows you to feel comfortable because you aren’t sharing your personal feelings with someone you don’t feel comfortable with.

Everyone goes through rough spots in their life whether it’s losing a job, having an illness, or just not feeling right. Keeping a journal can help you cope with life.

3. Keep a record of your own history.

Do you enjoy learning about history and the lives of those who have come before us? Do you worry about losing your legacy? When you write in a journal you are writing your own history.

I like the idea of keeping my own history because it’s a great way to keep good memories alive. I often find myself going back to reread my good days to relive the memories I will enjoy forever.

By keeping a record of your history, you can keep your legacy alive. Have you ever read the diary of a grandparent or even just someone from the past? Their lives seem so much more interesting. Who knows, 100 years from now someone might be reading your story and find you fascinating!

4. Practice Writing.

If you love to write, journaling is great practice. You can use a journal for yourself and you could even make it a writer’s notebook or have a separate writing journal. You may have heard that if you want to be a writer, you should write all the time. Journal writing is a great way to make sure you get your daily writing in.

When you keep a journal, you shouldn’t dwell on grammar and spelling. This might seem like it wouldn’t help your writing, but you must understand that good writing is much more than grammar and spelling. There are so many components to compelling writing that only practice, trial, and error can build. You will practice the feeling of writing, emotions, and develop your own tone.

5. Make, keep, and analyze your goals so that you can successfully achieve them.

Some people are very spontaneous. They live by the moment and never plan anything. Others seem to never do anything unless it’s been written in their daily planner for 3 months. A little spontaneity never hurt anyone and you can definitely over-plan. You should strive for somewhere in between.

Setting both long and short term goals can help contribute to being a happier person. Have you ever felt like you’ve never really accomplished anything in your life or that you don’t have anything to live for? By creating goals, you can set objectives for yourself and have something to work for. You will feel great every time you accomplish a goal.

Journaling is a great way to keep track of your goals. You could set your goals and check back on them every month or so to watch your progress. You can achieve anything you want if you work for it and plan. Now that you know how to write a journal, you can start reaping the rewards.
