How to Find Journal Writing Topics and Ideas

Do you ever find yourself sitting down to start writing in your journal only to realize you have nothing to write about? Does it make you feel like you have a boring life?

Running out of journal writing topics and journal writing ideas does not mean you have a boring life. All writers experience writer’s block at some point. The best thing to do is to always have a list of ideas of things to write about. When you get stuck, go through the list to get the juices flowing.

What Happened to you today?

When all else fails, write about your day. What did you do? What happened to you? How did you feel? Just give a step-by-step of your day. You don’t have to have an exciting story to tell about your day in order to write about it. Even if you never look back at it, it still got you writing.

What are you struggling with?

Journaling is a great way to get through hard times. Is there anything in your life that you are struggling with? Talk it out by writing it down. You won’t get a response from your journal, but often just writing it down and getting it off your chest is enough.

Describe the people in your life.

Describe your family, friends, coworkers, and anyone around you. Is there someone you admire in your life or maybe someone that you just don’t understand? It could be someone positive or negative in your life, or just anyone that interests you. This is a great way to get your writing juices flowing whenever you’re stuck. It will also help you to always remember those who are important to you.

Make and assess your goals.

It’s important for us to have goals. Goals give us something to work towards and give us a sense of well-being and importance. Keeping track of your goals is very easily done with a journal. You could have a day each month that you go over them and decide how to best achieve them. Throughout the month and can give updates of how everything is going.

Write about your dreams.

Your dreams and your goals may be one in the same, but for most, a dream seems unattainable. I’m not going to say you can achieve anything you want when you put your mind to it. That is your own decision. What are your dreams? Do you think they will ever come true? How can they change your life? Write about it in your journal.

Write stories.

If you’re a natural creative writer this will come easy for you if you haven’t already been doing it. You can write down stories of your own life experiences or make up your own. Try listening to a conversation. Try to write a story about the characters involved in the conversation and just let it explode. Write lots of little stories, or you could even have an ongoing story that never ends.

Write about how you feel at the moment.

Are you tired, hot, cold, angry, sick, happy, confused, etc.? You’d be surprised at how much you can write about how you feel.

Write the first word that pops into your head and expand on it.

If you are stuck at your journal and just can’t think of any journal writing topics, take the first word that pops in your head. What does it remind you of or make you think of. Can remember a time when you were talking with someone and suddenly you just realized you were rambling. You probably felt bad that you were wasting their time. Don’t worry about wasting time; just write whatever comes to you.
